Day 53 - A Day Off After 26 Straight Days of Biking

Brian became a grandfather yesterday, so today we flew back to Minnesota so he can see his new grandson.  This marks our first day off in 26 days – it has been a great run, but some time off will feel good.

With no bike ride to talk about today, I am going to post a few statistics.  We started this bike ride on May 1 - 52 days ago yesterday.  Of those 52 days we have biked 47 days and taken five days off due to bad weather.  In our 47 days of biking, we have biked 3,034 miles, with 1,031 miles to go.  Three quarters done!
  • Total time on the bike in those 41 days is 239 hours, 21 minutes.
  • Average daily speed has been just under 13 mph with the slowest day at 10.4 mph and the fastest day at 14.9 mph.
  • My fastest recorded speed has been 43.0 mph and I have biked faster than 40 mph on four separate occasions.  There have been 34 days I have got the bike over at least 30 mph.  Love those descents!
  • Total gross elevation climbed is 124,982 feet.  Said another way, we have biked 23.7 miles straight up into the air.
  • My average daily heart rate while biking is 126.  In the last 20 days it has been 123; down from 130 in the first 20 days of this trip.  Guess I am getting in shape.
  • I have burned a total of 153,000 calories, about 3,300 calories a day.  Yes, I have lost a couple pounds.

I saved a couple pictures from yesterday for today’s blog.  We crossed the Ohio River yesterday on a ferry.  On the Illinois side of that crossing was a small little town called Cave-In-Rock, IL.  The town felt very welcoming, partly due to these brightly colored bikes parked throughout the town.  There were at least a dozen, if not more.

The road on the right led straight to the ferry that carried us across the Ohio River.

Since I will not be biking tomorrow I will skip tomorrow’s post.  Be back on Saturday.
