Day 35 – Heading East

We biked 78.1 miles today to Boone, CO.  Roads were relatively good.  We sometimes had no shoulder but traffic was usually light (and considerate).  We did have a headwind for the first half of the day that did its best to take the fun out of our gently sloping descent.

Over the past weeks we have been biking northeast up to Missoula, MT and then southeast to Pueblo.  The entire ride so far, other than the first couple days, has been in mountains.  Today that all changed.  We came down from the mountains to 4,700 feet elevation and once we passed Pueblo, we turned our bikes to the east.  We will now be heading pretty much straight east for the rest of the journey.

By the end of the day we had completely lost sight of the mountains other than limited foothills.  To a certain degree it feels like we are starting an entirely different journey.  Instead of winding through mountains we are embarking on a relatively straight line due east with minimal elevation change until we hit the rolling hills of Missouri and then the Ozarks.  It will be a new experience.  I am not sure what is in store for us, but it is likely unpredictable and will present an entirely new set of challenges.

Time will tell soon enough.

Still rugged country, but the mountains are fading into the background.

  1. Halfway there, great work! Here's hoping the wind blows from the west for the next month or so :)
